Cabinet Refacing vs. Replacement: What Makes Sense for Your Richmond Kitchen

3 min read
New custom kitchen cabinetry

Cabinets are usually the largest single line in a kitchen budget, so the reface-or-replace decision shapes everything else. Kitchen and Bath Experts does all three options, refacing, painting and full replacement, across Richmond, so here is the honest comparison we give homeowners before they decide.

The three options

  • Painting. The existing cabinet boxes and doors stay; doors and drawer fronts are removed, sanded, primed and sprayed, boxes are painted in place, and new hardware goes on. Lowest cost, fastest, best for solid-wood doors in good shape.
  • Refacing. The boxes stay; doors, drawer fronts and hinges are replaced with new ones, and the exposed box surfaces are covered with matching veneer or laminate. You get a new door style and finish without changing the layout.
  • Replacement. Everything comes out and new stock, semi-custom or custom cabinets go in. The only option that changes the layout, adds an island, raises cabinets to the ceiling or fixes damaged boxes.

Figures are approximate planning ranges; a written proposal gives you one fixed number.

Reface or paint if

  • The boxes are solid, square and dry, with no water damage under the sink or around the dishwasher
  • The layout works and you are not adding an island or moving appliances
  • You like the amount of storage you have
  • Your budget is best spent on counters, backsplash and lighting instead
  • You are preparing a home for sale and want the biggest visual change for the least money

Many 1990s and 2000s kitchens in Henrico and Chesterfield have perfectly good oak or maple boxes with dated doors. Refacing to a painted shaker door, plus new counters, can make them look like new kitchens.

Replace if

  • Boxes are particleboard that has swelled, or shelves sag and drawers bind
  • You want a different layout, an island, a larger pantry or cabinets to the ceiling
  • You want modern storage: deep drawers instead of base cabinets with doors, pull-out trash, corner solutions, appliance garages
  • The kitchen is part of a larger renovation where walls are moving anyway
  • You plan to stay 10+ years and want the longest-lasting result

A common Richmond mistake

Refacing cabinets that are badly laid out. New doors on a kitchen with a cramped work triangle, a 24-inch gap between the range and the sink, or no landing space beside the refrigerator will look better and work exactly the same. If the complaint is function rather than finish, replacement is the fix.

What quality looks like in each option

  • Painting: doors sprayed off-site in a booth, not brushed in place; a bonding primer and a cabinet-grade enamel; new soft-close hinges.
  • Refacing: real wood or high-quality rigid thermofoil doors, veneer wrapped around face frames and end panels with no visible seams, new drawer glides.
  • Replacement: plywood boxes, dovetailed drawers, soft-close hinges and glides, and installation that is level, plumb and scribed to out-of-square walls, which matters in older Richmond homes.

Frequently asked questions

Can I reface some cabinets and replace others? Yes. A common approach is refacing the perimeter and adding a new island, as long as the finishes match.

Will refaced cabinets look cheap? Not when the doors are good quality and the veneer work is clean. Most guests cannot tell.

Can I keep my cabinets and just change the countertops? Usually yes, if the boxes are sound. Counters can be replaced on existing cabinets in a day.
